How to Build A Writing Habit In 10 Steps
how-to-build-a-writing-habit

There is one thing that I have done, that has made me more successful, brought me more success, and more money than anything else in my life. What is that one thing now? if you read the title, you probably already got this one thing. But the single most effective thing I’ve done in my life to build a business and make money, and have a living is to write. Writing more is directly proportional to your success in writing. I’m gonna demystify you, how to build a writing habit pretty easily.

Literally, my entire business and everything I do comes down to writing. Whether it’s writing a blog post, an eBook, or writing emails. Literally, every dollar I’ve made online has been because I have written something. So if this is so important why haven’t I been doing it that’s a pretty good question. And I’ve been trying to figure that out as well for a long time and I was in a really good writing habit.

It’s been a little bit of a writing slump up until the last week or so, I’ve gotten back into it and it’s gotten me excited about writing again. I forgot how much joy I get out of doing it and also how much success can come when you publish things on a regular basis. So it’s a very long-winded way of saying I’m going to teach you how to build a writing habit and why it is so essential that you do it.

For me, I should be writing every single day because if I don’t write, I don’t make money. That writing thing is a sort of, my bread-and-butter. The thing that really allows my business to thrive and helps me grow and that’s creating content writing, blog posts, and creating emails for my email list. Those are the things that are most effective. So building a writing habit is of utmost importance before diving into the stream.

Here are the 10 steps to build a writing habit. Let’s go.

1. Write For Yourself

Okay, number one, first and foremost. Start writing for yourself. The reason a lot of people get blocked and don’t write and don’t build the habit is because they think they have to publish it. They think other people have to read it so they don’t do it. So the best way is to start writing for yourself. You need to just write anything, it can be in a journal, it can be a Word doc like I use, it could be a hundred words a day, whatever it is. Just write, don’t worry about it, nobody’s gonna see it.

But every day in a week, go and write something. Maybe it’s a little journal entry, maybe it’s a little diary entry, maybe it’s what you ate today, doesn’t matter. Write something for yourself, that will allow you to actually start building the habit of doing it without the repercussions of oh my God! what are those people gonna think? I can’t put that out there. What are they gonna say! get that out of your head, just do it for yourself.

2. Add A Word Count

Once you’ve started writing a little bit just for yourself, now add a word count. Have a goal so you can say check the box. I did that. Start small 200 words a day whatever it is do that for a week. Once you get to that point, go to 300 words, and then 500 and 1000. For the last couple of years, I’ve been writing like two or three thousand words a day. I’ve been writing a lot I’m a pseudo-professional, it’s weird to think of myself as a professional writer but that essentially is what I am.

I’m not a good writer yet, I confess, but I can write quickly. So have a word count.

3. Gamify Things

Once you’ve started writing just a little bit for yourself. You’ve established a word count and you’re like, upping your words a little bit then we’re gonna want to turn this into a streak. Once you establish that with a writing streak it becomes, there’s the streaks app like “750 words”.

I’ve got a whole list of writing tools. I’ll list some best of them below. These apps are geared towards helping you write on a regular basis and build that habit. So once you’ve done it three days in a row, you’ve got a streak going. You’re not gonna break that streak okay.

So turn your game on, have an app or something where you check it off and after you see all those checkmarks of days that you’ve done it, you’re definitely not going to want to miss a day. That is one of the strongest things you can do in order to form that habit.

Here are some handy apps that will give you a helping hand to build your writing habit.

4. Have a “Prompt” For Ideas

Alright! if you’re struggling with ideas have a prompt I’ve got this book “642 tiny things to write about”. It’s great! “write from the viewpoint of someone who loses a child in a crowd”, “invent your own internet meme”, “fill in the blank”, and “if I had a diamond grill I would”. I mean it’s stupid stuff, but once you start writing something, it gets you in the habit of writing, you can start when you have a blank page.

That’s the hardest thing to do, to just come up with something out of thin air, come up with something from scratch. So try and give yourself a prompt every time you sit down to write. That’ll make building the habit easier.

5. Use An Outline

Okay, moving on to number five if you’re having trouble creating the narrative of what you’re writing, then outline it. If you are writing something for a client or you’re writing a blog post, outline at first and then it just becomes fill in the blanks. Once you’ve got the different bullet points, It becomes a lot easier to fill in the blanks.

6. Have A Writing Routine

Have a writing routine with consistency. Make your writing zone, like sitting arrangements, putting a bottle of water alongside, having a cup of tea or coffee before getting started, and then sit down, ready to go!

So figure out what gets you in the zone to write, what gets you in the mood to write, what gets you excited and motivated to write, and then try and do that every time and what you’ll find is that it comes naturally as you’re building this habit, you’re building this routine.

It’ll make it easier to keep a-going, day after day.

7. Have A Good Space To Write

Make sure you’ve got a good space to write. Even though sometimes I write in my office, sometimes I write in the corner of a cozy restaurant, someday sitting at the bench of an amusement park under the tree, while enjoying the birds chirping, wind chimes, and tree-crossing winds.

So for you, if you know you’re always gonna work in your office or if you’re always gonna work in a certain place in your home, try and make that as tidy as possible and this goes for not just your physical space, but your mental space as well.

Get rid of all that stuff, get rid of all those apps. Open up your computer and keep it simple.

8. Accountability

Number eight is ‘accountability’. Find somebody to do this with, it’s one thing. To try and do it on your own, it’s a whole other thing. If somebody else is doing it with you and you have to check in with them the next day, and they’re gonna be like, hey pal! you’re 500 words and you have to be like, “I Didn’t”

And then there’s gonna be some repercussions. The repercussions are up to you to figure out what they’re going to be. Maybe you’ve got positive repercussions if you do it every day for a week maybe if you miss a day (it’s a negative thing). Figure out what works for you.

If you can find somebody to do it with, it makes it so much easier and so much fun because that person can also help you proofread your written stuff. Help give you ideas, help bounce ideas off each other.

Have a writing partner, it’s a helpful thing that a lot of people don’t think to consider.

9. Declare It Publicly

We’re almost at the end. Declare it publicly. So go to your Facebook page or your Instagram, and say I am going to start a daily writing habit, not necessarily gonna publish it, but I’m going to check in once a week and update you on if I did it. And so by making yourself accountable to the public even if nobody else cares, you’re going to care and it’s going to give you that little push when you’re like, “I don’t feel like writing right now”, but I told everybody else I’ll do it, so I got to do it!

10. Have A Reason For A Writing

This is a big one, so pay attention it’s important. Have a tangible reason for why you want to become a writer and build a writing habit. Why do you want to do it?

For me, the reason’s obvious! The more I write, the more money I make. The more people I help the more I’m able to put stuff out there. It’s great but why do you want to do it. Because you want to become a freelance writer, and you don’t want to be overwhelmed once you start.

You know bringing in a bunch of clients and you need to know how to pump out words on a regular basis. It’s because you’re desperate to learn how to communicate through written words. Are you striving to get promoted at your job? understand why you want to build a writing habit.

Have a reason because if you have a good reason you’re gonna be more likely to do it and think about what that reason is on a daily basis. Write down why you are doing it. That’s gonna make you more likely to do it as well. But if you don’t have a reason then it’s probably not gonna happen.

We talked about this a lot when it comes to just generally building a business, a lot of people say I want to become a freelance writer and quit my job and start a business. But why? What’s the point? how is that going to enrich your life? how is that going to make it better?

So think about this how. Building writing habits going to make your life better. For me it’s not just about making money, it’s not just about publishing blog posts. Being able to write more and get my thoughts out, it’s kind of therapeutic at times. It also gives me a lot more ideas.

The more I write, the more ideas I have. So I’ve got all kinds of reasons for myself but figure out what you’re reading.

That’s it! that’s the ten points, that’s how to build a writing habit.

Bottom Line

I think freelance writing is the best way to build an online business and part of that is going to building a writing habit, so this is all comes full circle. There’s a whole reason you’re reading this. So let’s do it together I’m here to help.

If it’s something you’re interested in, we’re gonna have new posts for you soon and I hope you have a fantastic rest day.

Cheers!

  6. Making time for hobbies and interests outside of blogging not only helps to prevent burnout, but it also allows you to bring new perspectives and ideas back to your blog. Whether it’s reading, playing a sport, or taking up a new hobby, taking time for yourself can help to re-energize and reignite your passion for blogging.

One more aspect of self-care that has been crucial for me is exercise. Regular exercise helps to manage stress, boost energy levels and improve overall health. Whether it’s a quick walk around the block, a yoga class, or a full workout, incorporating exercise into your routine can help you to maintain balance and prevent burnout.

Finally, it’s important to seek support from friends, family, and a community of fellow bloggers. As a blogger, it can be a lonely journey at times, and it’s important to have a supportive network of people who understand your experiences and can offer encouragement and support when you need it.

In conclusion, self-care is a crucial aspect of being a successful blogger. By setting boundaries, taking breaks, making time for hobbies, incorporating exercise and seeking support, you can maintain balance, manage stress and prevent burnout while pursuing your blogging goals.
